Video Seen: Commentary on school conditions in Compton, California - lack of sanitation (roach and mouse infested) - teachers, staff talking about intolerable conditions to work or teach students in. The community and volunteers came together to rebuild the school and make it a better place.
Dr. Safary's Moral of the Story (in this video): Anything is possible if you have a vision and a goal to accomplish.
Class Notes: (30 million people in the United States live in poverty)
-Social class often determines the types of employment one can obtain. This can affect one's future. Class is a system that differentially structures group access to economic, political, cultural, and social resources. It determines the schools we attend, the stores in which we shop, the places we eat, and the community which we live, as well as the jobs we have access to.
-A college education dictates social mobility and the climb up the ladder.
-Family background determines educational and occupational attainment.
-Challenges: Inequalities in Class (Women, individuals w/disabilities, elderly, children, minorities)
-SES: occupation, education and income (3) factors that determine SES
-Income Disparities: wealth, power
-What is the "better life" ? Why do the rich get richer and the poor get poorer? Because the rich have connections.
-Occupation determines income. (White-collar & Blue-collar workers)
-Education - what are the statistics for 2010 - median income?
-Families in poverty are disapproportionately headed by single mothers & also socially isolated.
-Mckinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act req. public schools to provide educational rights & protections for homeless children and youth.
-Abt 37% of all families are considered to be members of the middle class.
-The Upper Class - typically male, homogenous group of well educated people
-8% White, 7% Asian, 23% African, 21% Spanish (ethnic groups in poverty)
-Why is there disparity among the ethnic groups? they represent a group tht have historical experiences of
oppression.
-Role of education: An education is perhaps the best insuranc for having a living income and means to get a better job.
-Work to understand systemic and social conditions that lead to SES for students and families.
Summary: There must be equality in school curicculum.
